◂ Vision of a just recovery from covid19 ▸

From the 16th of July to the 30th of August 2020, the Climate Justice Coalition ran the #JustRecoveryArt Challenge, an online art competition open to all residents of South Africa. Artists were invited to submit drawings, paintings, music, sound art, video art, crafts, and sculptures communicating their vision of a just recovery from COVID-19.

CRAFTS AND SCULPTURES

Rebicycled bird - Jon-Pat Myers: Our design is cradle to grave and its a mistake. We need to be able to find a way for our garbage to be reduced or re-purposed and my sculpture attempts to show that a work of art can be made from 100% repurposed material that would have gone to landfill and provide people with many more years of use and enjoyment.

Hubuki - Jon-Pat Myers: Hubuki means hug in Hebrew and the work shows two figures rising above the conflict and history to reconcile. The legs are black and white to signify opposing points of view. The black and red of the posts are for war and blood. The wire is the separation. The two figures rise.. overcome and then share the mutual silver to reflect each others light and show similarity rather than difference.

Donald Mphethi - Burgersfort: Windmill art craft shows that the underground and river water is more cleaner and can be drawn without tempering with the greenhouse. Reasonable and good rains find it easy to gather and irrigate the world.

Donald Mphethi - Johannesburg: Our drawing demonstrates that the use of renewable energy is our best option to achieve a cleaner and healthy atmosphere. The comparison is made before and during Covid-19 where the world has become the best breathing place for people, animals and the nature itself. The contaminating industries have been made to stop to 'by default' allow trees, the sky and water to gain strength for the livelihood of every living organism.

George and Vicky: We depict hope for a just recovery from covid. The balloon is out of reach someone needs to go grab it and make it a reality.

Melenecia: My artwork is all about women empowerment that is why I did half a face to show that women are perfect in every way and not just for their looks. I feel that women should be able to feel confident in their bodies and that no one should judge how they look.

Twilight Creative Collective: A 40m mural depicts a vision for Twilight Centre, Hillbrow, Joburg, Gauteng, South Africa and the world. A caring ecological community, solar powered, water harvesting, food gardens and creative solutions.

Logan hull - Johannesburg

Georgia Richards: I am 9 years old, and I have always lived in Cape Town. This is my dream of what Cape Town would look like after a "just recovery.

Blake Robinson & Karl Schulschenk: A just recovery focuses on wellbeing, and enables all income groups to participate in their communities and economies. It prioritises nutritious food, active mobility, education, small businesses and renewable energy.

A lot of things are uncertain at the moment, but there’s one thing we know for sure: decisions made now in response to COVID-19 will shape our lives for years to come. The response to COVID-19 could ensure a just recovery for everyone in the wake of this crisis. The next step is working together to hold our leaders to account.

It can be hard to look to the future. It’s a sad and frightening time – but there are reasons for hope, too.
