THERE were 21 titles up for grabs and many new – and old – champions at the Jersey Island Table Tennis Championships.

Teenage sensation Hannah Silcock led the way with four titles to her name, while Mariusz Cieminski and Grzegorz Frankowski picked up three each.

Silcock won the women’s singles, U18s girls’ singles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles with her older sister, Kathryn, either as her opponent or her partner in each of the finals.

In the women’s singles and U18s girls’ singles finals, Hannah enjoyed 4-0 wins over Kathryn, as she did when partnering Leon Pierre in the mixed doubles, with her sister pairing up with Jonathan Le Fondre. In the women’s doubles final, the Silcocks beat Esther Lewis and Freya Allaway 4-0.

However, Hannah didn’t have it all her own way, as she lost 4-2 to Leon Pierre in the open U21 singles final.

Cieminski beat Frankowski 4-1 to win the men’s singles but Frankowski got his revenge in the veteran’s men’s singles, coming back from 3-1 down for a 4-3 victory. They then teamed up to win both the men’s doubles and the veteran’s doubles, beating Miguel de Freitas and Ian Lambert 4-0 in the former and Lambert and Eugene Ellis 4-0 in the latter.

Ellis got the better of his playing partner in the Over-50s singles final, 4-1, and picked up his second title of the day in the O60s, beating Rob Blackmore 4-0. The Over-70s winner was Frank Beaugeard after he beat Dave Le Clercq 4-2.

In the junior open doubles, Kathryn Silcock once again paired up with Le Fondre and they eased to the title, beating Kevan Moreira and Oscar Karwowski 4-0 in the final.

Karwowksi did win a title, when he beat Theo de Poerk 4-2 in the U13s open singles final. Allaway beat Lewis 4-2 in the final to become U15 girls ‘ champion and Le Fondre was the winner of the U18s boys final after a 4-0 win over Moreira, who also lost in the U15s boys’ final, going down 4-2 to William Cornthwaite.

The closest fought final was between Jonty Porter and Xavier Bartus in the U11 open singles, which Porter won in a tie break in the deciding seventh game.

Archie Greier beat James Cleverly in the U9 open singles final and, finally, Chris Morshead took the restricted singles title after beating Kamil Jedrasik 4-1.
