KATIE DE LA CLOCHE scored a hat-trick of tries in Jersey’s 22-5 win at Old Oakmeadians, in what head coach Simon Le Moignan described as a ‘disjointed game.’
It wasn’t helped when Jersey learned that their hosts only had 12 players and no coach.
Le Moignan lent them a couple of players to make a decent fist of it but said it was a ‘stop-start game’ having to make changes for both teams.
‘It was quite weird. They could have told us the scenario beforehand and we would have adapted the squad,’ said Le Moignan.
‘It was frustrating but everyone got good game time and we got the win.
‘In spells we played some really good rugby but it was a ground-out victory.’
Ashling Magner scored the first try before De La Coche scored her three, with Magner also making one conversion. All of the tries came from forwards ‘pick-and-goes’ and putting the try scorers in the gap.
However, both Heather Taylor and Franky Vautier picked up elbow injuries that could rule them out of the Siam Cup in May.
Meanwhile, Saskia Martin put in a ‘back-of-the-match’ performance, on her debut for the club, on the right wing.
Jersey, second in NC 2 South East (South), face a much tougher proposition next week, when unbeaten leaders Horsham fly to St Peter.
‘Sunday will be bit more of a challenge but that’s exactly what we want,’ added Le Moignan, who has applied for promotion, which may see the back of situations that Oakmeadians put them in.
‘You hope that if we do go up, the clubs will be a little more structured.’
