Sound advice

Noxolo advises potential students, particularly from disadvantaged backgrounds, to make God the centre of everything they do.

“In life, others will get done before you. Some will have it easy and smooth sailing, but as long as you have breath in you, you will get to where you want to be,” she says.

Always brighter on the other side of that tunnel

Despite years of personal setbacks, an NWU alumnus has a story of triumph that could inspire others who cannot yet see light at the end of the tunnel.

Noxolo Rejoice Bulungwa (26) recently graduated with an honours degree in labour relations management.

This was hot on the heels of a BA degree in behavioural sciences, specialising in psychology and labour relations management. She was also a Golden Key recipient for the year 2021.

Conquering her confusion

“After finishing high school in 2014, I had no idea what I wanted to study and I was in a confused state,” explains Noxolo.

Owing to the dire financial state of her family, she decided to get a job at a Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) franchise.

“I worked at KFC for a year between 2016 and 2017 and I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything in the world,” she recalls.

She attributes her drive and willingness to study and persevere to the long hours she used to work at KFC, coupled with seeing her peers making it in life.

Noxolo says she will be eternally grateful to a good friend who saw her potential and ensured that she finally applied and started her tertiary studies at the NWU.

Tragedy struck Noxolo’s family in 2021 when she lost her mother to Covid-19. Being the first born of four girls, the responsibility for raising her siblings, who share a house with her at Jouberton in Klerksdorp, then fell on her.

A long and winding road

Although the road has been a long and winding one for Noxolo, she is confident of landing that dream job soon thanks to the qualifications she obtained at the NWU.

“I strongly believe in ‘own lane’, ‘own pace’. Had I gone to university straight after matric, in that confused state about what I wanted for my future, I would have spent four years studying a course I didn’t like and… sometimes one has to take the longer route than others to get to the same destination,” she quips.
