Jersey Women ‘fundamentally sound’

SIMON LE MOIGNAN’S new axis between scrum-half, fly-half and inside centre ‘worked wonders’ as Jersey RFC Women cruised to a 49-0 away victory at Hove 2nds.

Captain Lauren Lowe settled well into her new role at 12, while ‘back of the game’ Ashling Magner played at ten, with Laura Turpin at nine.

The victory is their fifth on the run and keeps them firmly in the conversation at the top end of Women’s NC 2 South East (South).

In a similar vein to Jersey RFC’s men, the coach called for a more complete performance – and the team duly obliged.

‘It was a little scrappy during the first half, but we did well to score five tries and be pretty comfortable at the break,’ said Le Moignan.

‘Nicole [Rodrigues Ferreira] had her opposite number on toast playing prop on her debut.

‘It was a seriously impressive first game and being able to bring new faces in that make an impact like that is very exciting for the rest of the season.

‘We have been focusing a lot on our fundamentals in training and they were absolutely superb.

‘Our line-out functioned really well, along with our scrum and we made good decision-making at the breakdown.

‘Our success stems from doing the little things right and the girls were seriously good at doing exactly that.

‘We have to give respect to Hove for their efforts, but you could see that we were more conditioned and, as the game went on, it was increasingly comfortable.’

Two fixtures remain in 2022 for Le Moignan’s side, hosting Crawley Ladies on 4 December, before a stiffer challenge awaits against Worthing on the mainland.

The latter boast the same record as the Islanders, with Jersey’s only defeat (a walkover) recorded on the opening day against Horsham – due to player unavailability.

They will be looking to extend their unbeaten playing record into the new year, while making inroads into the gap between themselves and Horsham Women at the summit.
