Wanderers at their best as they storm into early lead

JERSEY WANDERERS Women grabbed a hard-fought away win over Rozel Rovers, in what coach Chris Duncan called ‘the best game I’ve seen us play’.

Both sides were tied on three points following walkovers from Grouville, who have been unable to fulfil their first two fixtures in the JFA Women’s Division.

Duncan, who took the reins of Wanderers for this season, had to wait only 50 seconds to see his efforts rewarded.

Samantha Silva scored the opening goal before the minute mark, with a move straight off the training ground.

He said: ‘We have worked so much on the movement of the forwards and getting our wingers into the box with a late run. To see it work perfectly that early on in the game was brilliant and something that doesn’t happen very often.

‘It all stemmed from Catherine [Baudains] driving out from defence.

‘With the delay to the start of the season, we have tried to use the extra time to work on some things in training and that has paid off.’

If last season was anything to go by, the two sides were expected to be evenly matched, with competitive games throughout the season.

Most of this match was played in the middle of the park, with neither side giving an inch.

The hosts got their reward for hanging in there on the hour mark with an equaliser from Nazmin Ribeiro.

However, Duncan’s side hit back and scored the decisive goal on 75 minutes through Sofia Rodrigues.

Duncan said: ‘I think it was probably the best performance I have seen from them.

‘Rozel were very strong, as can be expected, but I was really impressed with how tight we kept proceedings.

‘Even after we lost our lead, the girls didn’t drop off and to then get all three points showed great fight.’

Rovers will aim to bounce back this weekend as they face a St Lawrence side yet to get their league campaign under way.

Meanwhile, Wanderers will hope that Grouville are in a position to fulfil their scheduled fixture.
