Two-digit plates sell for thousands

TWO-DIGIT number plates have sold for five-figure sums at Glencoe Auction Rooms.

Number plate JSY91 was sold for £26,500 at public auction at the weekend.

Meanwhile, JSY92 went for £22,000 and JSY003 was sold for £15,000.

Speaking ahead of the auction, auctioneer Simon Drieu, of Simon Drieu and Co, said: ‘People do like the individuality of having a cherished number plate.

‘Sometimes these numbers do mean something to them.’

Last year, two-digit number plates commanded a similar fee at auction, with JSY95 sold for £28,000 and JSY96 sold for £22,000.

The current record for a sale of a two-digit number plate at auction remains £139,000 in August this year.

Meanwhile, the former Lieutenant-Governor’s number plate J4 holds the overall record for the sale of a number plate in Jersey at auction, after it was sold for a fee of £380,000 in 2020.
