A LOCAL comedian has been shortlisted for a national award for the poetry she publishes online.

Martha MacDonald has been confirmed as a finalist in the 2022 Funny Women Content Creator Award, among 16 other comedians from around the UK who have all been recognised as ‘hidden gems of comedy’ and ‘new voices’ on social media networks.

Miss MacDonald said: ‘To get that recognition for my comedy on a national scale is a huge step forward for my career and I’m completely honoured to have even made the shortlist.

‘The other contenders are all comedians whose work I hugely admire, so it’s a massive compliment to be in their company.’

The Funny Women Awards support women in comedy, and other categories have previously been won by the likes of acclaimed comedians Katherine Ryan, Sarah Millican and Desiree Burch.

Miss MacDonald is known for her funny poetry videos that she posts on Instagram, Twitter and TikTok, as well as on her own website, racking up tens of thousands of views on each video.

She is a credited writer on the first series of BBC Radio sketch show DMs Are Open, and has written for a number of publications including Country Life Magazine.

She is now working towards a UK tour after the recent local debut of her one-woman show SHELL, a homage to her pet tortoise, which was commissioned by Jersey Arts Centre over the summer.

The Funny Women Awards ceremony will be held next Thursday at London’s Bloomsbury Theatre.

The winner will be announced after a public vote, which opened on 22 September and closes at 2pm on Thursday. The winner will receive a cash prize, exclusive media coverage, as well as professional mentorship from the Funny Women community and industry partners.

Miss MacDonald added: ‘I’m just so excited to attend the awards ceremony in London, meet other people in the industry and soak it all in.’
