DAIRY farmers in Jersey have been offered a life-line by the government who have announced a £400,000 support package to help them cope with extra costs caused by extreme weather and other global issues affecting supply chains this summer.

Economic Development Minister Kirsten Morel said the payment will be funded entirely from underspending in the department’s existing budget to tackle the dairy industry’s viability in the short term while further planning for long term security of the rural economy is being addressed.

Deputy Morel said: ‘We know that farmers have been under significant pressure over recent months with significant increases in the costs of fuel and feed and drought conditions over the summer months.

‘Jersey’s dairy farmers are important not only to ensure our high quality, and internationally recognised, milk but also as custodians of our Island’s natural environment and landscape which they do so much to protect.’
