Home Stories: Botanologica in Falls Church City

Botanologica in Falls Church City, VA is a real treasure. It’s tag line says it all: Thoughtful Design for Garden & Home. With an artful eye, owners Julie Liu and Holly Manon create and curate unique items for your home and garden.  Decorating an indoor space with plants brings about a sense of relaxation and tranquility. There is a sense of life and a pop of color.

At Botanologica, you can find hundreds of species of house plants ranging from fleshy succulants, whispy ferns, fuzzy African violets, draping pothos, and Pickle cacti. If you’re not sure which special potted lovely is for you, no worries! Owners, Julie and Holley, will help you pick the perfect plant pet and provide care instructions as well.

Whether you are buying for yourself or for a gift, a holistic approach to plant ownership is important. All of their plants are locally-grown (within 150 miles) and American-grown flower varieties. They choose locally for the following reasons:

  • Flowers are cut and delivered quickly and, when a bouquet, have a longer vase life
  • Small farm production can grow heritage varieties with scent and color nuance
  • Ephemeral and fragile flowers and plants, often not available in the mass market, can be grown and shipped with greater care
  • Flowers grown nearby reflect the Seasons and Place in our region
  • Buying local saves transportation “calories” associated with importing
  • Local farms employ local workers, and buying local supports local economies
  • Local farms support our pollinator population and often use environmentally sound farming practices to preserve resources.

Just walking around the perfectly adorned, Cape Cod store you will get all sorts of ideas for decorating with plants. My personal favorite was the antique card catalog chest with drawers pulled out for the perfect perch of various succulents. But the decorating does not stop with just plants. There are birds nests and eggs, beeswax candles, feather and twig wreaths. For the human styling, there are the coziest sweaters, scarves, bags, and jewelry, not to mention lotions and creams. I did not escape my trip without the purchase of an Italian Uashmama paper-based pot cover for my spikey friend at home and the coolest telescope on a chain necklace for me!

Botanologica offers a potting bench, classes, and just released this month, locally sourced, and therefore very seasonal, BOUQUET SUBSCRIPTIONS.
All you have to do is call with questions and sign up.
