Are you home schooling (again…) at the moment? Would you like to encourage your child to do more art and design? We know that a lot of schools are brilliantly supporting work across the curriculum, but you might also want to have a look at the V&A’s #LetsMakeWednesdays series of creative challenges – and have family fun at home together.
Since April 2020, we’ve published a weekly activity with exciting art and design activities to do at home. These simple projects are designed for you to make with things you can find around your house. They’re also (sometimes) linked to some extraordinary parts of the V&A collection. We thought that it might be useful to look back at some of our most popular challenges – check out our top five and have a go!
1. Mosaics
Learn about mosaics – beautiful pictures or patterns made from tiny pieces. Discover the V&A’s collection of micromosaics and design your own mosaic treasure box with small bits of material you find around the house. What will your mosaic be about?
2. Redesign everyday objects
Let’s redesign an everyday object! Put on the designer’s hat and think creatively about what objects you can improve. Take on this challenge, get problem solving and see how you can make the world better through design.
3. Spectacular sensory stories
Create your own sensory story! Explore the world of immersive storytelling by using your senses. Be inspired by the V&A collection, find everyday objects and add colour, texture, smell and sound to your favourite story. Then invite your family to experience your story in a new and exciting way.
4. Art Deco patterns
Be playful with patterns! Let’s travel back in time and explore Art Deco – inspired by our collection, make your own stamps and design your own geometric Art Deco patterns using household materials.
5. Why do we wear clothes?
Become an innovator! Get inspired by Helen Hancocks’s wonderfully illustrated book called Why do we wear clothes and take on a fashion design challenge. Explore unusual objects in our collection and invent a new piece of clothing.
