MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – The Milwaukee Public Schools Foundation is launching a new effort called #ConnectMilwaukee.
The goal is to connect students to the internet and tools they need to succeed.
The MPS Foundation is trying to raise $1 million which will be combined with $1 million from MPS. It will be used to buy portable WiFi hotspots for students in need.
Earlier this spring, many students received Chromebooks because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the need to learn from home, but for some, it’s hard to get online.
The first phase of the campaign will be aimed at helping the more than 5,000 students in the district who are considered homeless. The device will give them a solid connection wherever they go.
“Providing that device for access and a six or 12 month time frame for service, so there’s that peace of mind,” MPS Foundation Executive Director Wendell Willis said. “We don’t want anybody to be without and then worry, ‘how can I get stuff done?’”.
Willis said they hope to raise the money as soon as possible. More information and a link to donate can be found on the MPS Foundation website.
