The book will be a guide to some of the world's most fascinating places, as seen and experienced by Bourdain, who passed away in France in June 2018. Bourdain had been working on it before his death, and it was completed by his colleague, Laurie Woolever, who spent nearly a decade assisting him and also co-authored his cookbook, Appetites. It's a collection of Bourdain’s favourite places to visit, including advice on when to go, where to stay, what to eat once there, and, in some cases, what to avoid.

The exuberant 61-year-old from New York had extensive travel experience and had seen much of the world prior to his untimely death. He died through suicide while filming his popular CNN series, Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, which usually saw him taking the road less travelled while introducing viewers to local chefs, exploring different restaurants and sampling unusual dishes. The new book is supplemented by anecdotes from friends, colleagues, family members, and a guide to Chicago's best cheap eats by legendary music producer, Steve Albini.

This includes sardonic accounts of travelling with Bourdain by his brother, Chris. Additionally, each chapter includes witty illustrations by cartoonist Tony Millionaire. Fans loved following Bourdain's great travel adventures, including dining with former US president, Barack Obama, in Hanoi, and being dared by his great friend, Éric Ripert, to successfully milk a cow in the French Alps.
