Gay Local Tips in San Diego

San Diego: Music to watch boys to

Discover 'America's Finest City', its amazing queer life, and the best spots to people-watch in Hillcrest, San Diego's gayborhood. Todd and Randy are two hosts in this Californian hotspot and your perfect guides. Explore the world. Experience your pride.

What makes San Diego a top gay destination?

San Diego is a beautiful and vibrant coastal city that's not far from the desert and mountains. It has mild weather year-round and offers plenty of outdoor activities, gorgeous men, and a central gay neighborhood! We love San Diego in part because it's welcoming to gays. Even though it has a large military presence, San Diego has a liberal vibe and casual, live-and-let-live quality of life.

What's the best gay event in San Diego?

If you enjoy crowds, our Pride event each July is the fourth largest in the U.S. To mingle with the locals at a smaller event, check out CityFest in August in the heart of Hillcrest, San Diego's gayborhood.

Best gay place to grab a bite to eat?

Baja Betty's is a fun place to eat Mexican food for lunch and sit in the sun to people-watch. Head to Martini's for dinner and catch a cabaret show or sip on one of their large signature Martinis.

Best gay bar for a cheap beer?

Start at Uptown Tavern with their local beer selection, then walk over to Flicks for the later crowd. Head over to The Hole for Sunday Funday and drink your fill from personal pitchers.

Right, we're ready to go party... where?

Rich's is fun and they host a variety of special event nights to cater to the diversity of our community. If you're up late, there's also Numbers, Spin and The Rail. Urban Mo's is the place for a country line dancing certain nights of the week.

Which gay bar offers the best happy hour?

We like to go to Hillcrest Brewing Company (the world's first gay brewpub) hosting "Hoppy Hours" everyday from 3-6pm. Our favorite beers (yes, these are beers) are the Banana Hammock, Crotch Rocket and Pearl Necklace! The Merrow has the longest happy hour everyday from noon to 8 pm!

Where to start a gay tour in San Diego?

We advise our guests to rent bikes (available for pick up and drop off around the city) to check out the beautiful Balboa Park, home to the San Diego Zoo and a variety of museums and attractions. It's next to the Hillcrest gayborhood, so you can easily make a large, gay loop to see it all and stop to eat and drink along the way.

Best place to socialize with the local gay community?

If you're brave, make the climb down to the northern end of Black's Beach, a clothing-optional beach where you'll find the gays enjoying San Diego sunshine in the buff.

A gay place for brunch on weekends?

Put on your stretch pants and head to Urban MO's for an all-you-can-eat-and-drink Sunday brunch.

What are your other favorite gay venues in San Diego?

The boys gather for Friday happy hour on top of the Porto Vista Hotel where you can enjoy a beautiful view of San Diego bay. When we're in the mood for culture we head to Diversionary Theatre for shows themed around gay culture.

Finally, why should we visit San Diego?

Whether you want to go to the bars, the beaches or explore the city with its eclectic neighborhoods, there's always something to do in San Diego. You can enjoy one of the many craft breweries or urban wineries, find a hike that fits your fitness level, go shopping, head to live theater, and even paraglide if you're adventurous. If you get bored here, something's wrong! ●
