Trump’s Unacceptable Proposal on Border Fails to Protect Human Rights

January 19, 2019

The following can be attributed to Joanne Lin, National Director of Advocacy and Government Affairs at Amnesty International USA:

“The president’s proposal fails to provide adequate protection for Dreamers and TPS recipients. A temporary three-year extension of status is not a permanent legislative solution.

“The president has signaled his intent to strip due process protections for thousands of unaccompanied children from Central America and other parts of the world. These children are fleeing life-threatening situations and seeking safety and protection in the U.S.

“People on both sides of the border continue to be caught in a crisis of the administration’s own making. While the president continues his political posturing, thousands of children and families are being forced to wait in dangerous conditions in Mexico. It’s time to get the government back to working order and pass a spending bill that protects the human rights of children and families along the southern border.”

“Congress should not fund the Trump border wall. Instead of blocking children and families, the U.S. needs to ensure access to a fair asylum process.”
