Watch The National play ‘About Today’ as tribute to Frightened Rabbit’s Scott Hutchison

"You just walked away / And I just watched you / What could I say"

The National dedicated their track ‘About Today’ to Frightened Rabbit frontman Scott Hutchison at their inaugural music festival in New York.

Hutchison died back in May after taking his own life following a battle with depression.

The band performed the tribute during There’s No Leaving New York at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens on Sunday (September 30) as part of a mammoth 23-song set.

A member of the audience took to Twitter to write: “The National just dedicated ‘About Today’ to Scott Hutchison and the place went pin-drop quiet. Extremely moving”.

The two-day festival also included performances Cat PowerPhoebe Bridgers, Future Islands, and Bully.

This is not the first time The National have honoured the Frightened Rabbits frontman. They also dedicated ‘About Today’ to Hutchison at All Points East festival this summer.

Other bands have recently been compelled to remember Hutchison musically. In August, The Charlatans were joined by members of Frightened Rabbit to cover ‘Heads Will Roll’, while Death Cab For Cutie recorded a cover of Frightened Rabbit‘s ‘My Backwards Walk’ from their seminal album ‘The Midnight Organ Fight’ for a Spotify Studios NYC session.

Speaking to NME about frontman Hutchison’s life and legacy, Death Cab frontman Ben Gibbard said: “I find myself having those epiphany moments with a band, and those moments are fewer and far between.

“I’m blown away less frequently than I once was, and ‘The Midnight Organ Fight’ kind of came into my sphere at a pivotal time for me when I was going through a difficult time in my life.”
