The risk of concussions worries athletes, coaches and parents. Every time an athlete takes a blow to the head, quick evaluation is vital. Concussions have been on the forefront of medical research and media attention for over a decade, and concussion clinics now provide state-of-the-art care for a variety of patients who may have suffered a concussion. Learn more about the Lake Health Concussion Clinic, which operates full-time at the Brunner Sanden Deitrick Wellness Campus in Mentor:

How do you test for a concussion?

We use a battery of tests including a computerized neurocognitive test, balance assessment, a visual coordination exam and a full head and neck evaluation. If X-rays are required, they can be performed on site.

Who can get a concussion?

Anyone can get a concussion. While a large focus of ours, as sports medicine professionals, is to treat our local middle school, high school, and collegiate athletes, we also treat concussions that result from accidents that occurred both on and off the job, car accidents, falls and assaults. Just as we work with schools to minimize the impact a concussion will have on their schooling, we work with employers to allow a worker to do as much as they safely can while recovering.

How long does it take to return to sports and activities after a concussion?

Recovering from a concussion takes time and careful monitoring. Our sports medicine team has built strong relationships with the local schools we serve through our athletic trainers to make sure that students are progressed back into a learning environment safely and using various accommodations. It is our intent to keep students in school as much as possible and to minimize the impact a concussion has on academic performance. When it is safe for the student to return to athletics, we stay connected with our dedicated team of athletic trainers to make sure your child follows the current standards of medicine and reenters the game safely. This takes place over several days and should be monitored by an individual who is trained in concussions.
