CHAMPS: Mason Men & Women Crowned A-10 Outdoor Track & Field Champions

AMHERST, Ma. – SWEEP!

For the second time in four years, both the George Mason men's and women's track and field teams claimed the title of Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track and Field Champions on Sunday at the UMass Track & Field Complex.
 
The women finished with 159 points, 33 points ahead of the runner-up and defending champion VCU (126). While the men scored 174.5, well surpassing VCU, who finished as the runner-up on the men's side as well (141).
 
Senior sprinter Rico Gomez was selected as the A-10 Men's Track Performer of the Year and sophomore Jaylen Simmons earned the A-10 Men's Field Performer of the Year. Gomez earned a gold medal in the men's 400-meter (46.61s), an event that was swept by the Patriots as junior Tyler Benson finished with a silver medal (47.10s) and fellow junior Evander Pierre received a bronze (47.16s). Gomez also earned a silver medal in the 200-meter dash (21.43s), along with being a part of the 4x100-meter relay team that earned a gold medal (40.97s) and the 4x400-meter relay team that notched another gold medal (3:12.35).
 
Simmons finished with a gold medal in the shot put, earning a personal best in the event (17.45m). The sophomore later netted a silver medal in the discus (49.86m). The Waynesboro, Va. native also set a school record in the hammer throw (52.38m). The former record holder was none other than assistant coach Jason Wellington, who was looking on as Simmons broke his record.
 
Another school record was broken over the weekend on the women's side, as junior Khalilah Hamer finished the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:21.05.
 
In the women's 200-meter dash, junior Taylor Williams took home the gold (24.45s), while senior Sarah Moore finished one step behind her teammate and finished with the silver medal (24.46s). Williams also earned another gold medal in the 100-meter dash (11.94s), and winning two more golds, being a part of the 4x100-meter relay team (45.92s) and the 4x400-meter relay team (3:40.16). The junior played a role in earning the women four gold medals over the weekend.
 
Mason head coach Andrew Gerard was named both the A-10 Women's Coach of the Year and the A-10 Men's Coach of the Year.
