Will ‘Elsa’ be gay in the sequel to ‘Frozen’?

"We have tons of conversations about it"

The creator of Frozen has said that she is open to the idea of lead character Elsa having a female love interest.

Recent years have seen many fans calling for more LGBTQ representation in Disney films. Last year, this came into fruition when Josh Gad played LeFou in Beauty And The Beast as Disney’s first openly gay character.

Since release and huge box office success of Frozen, there has been much online speculation as to whether protagonist Elsa is in fact gay. A petition was also started called ‘#GiveElsaAGirlfriend‘.

Now, writer and co-director Jennifer Lee has said that the team are considering it.

“Where we’re going with it, we have tons of conversations about it, and we’re really conscientious about these things,” she told The Huffington Post.

She added: “I always write from character-out, and where Elsa is and what Elsa’s doing in her life, she’s telling me every day. We’ll see where we go,”

Frozen star Idina Menzel has also said that she is “really happy” that her character has created the conversation around sexuality in animated films.

“Maybe at first I was a little surprised because it’s Disney, but I can say that I’m excited that the conversation is happening,” she told PrideSource. “I can’t promise anybody that that’s what’s gonna happen…But deep down am I really happy that it’s causing people to talk about it and have these kinds of conversations? Yeah, I am.”

The sequel to Frozen is due for release on November 27, 2019.
